Privacy Policy
What's Under My Feet!? is a free, ad supported app that shows the point on the opposite side of the Earth from where you stand. To do that it needs your location. This page explains what the app does with it and what else leaves your phone. There is no account and no sign-in. It covers the Android app and the iOS version now in preparation, which behaves the same way except that it draws maps and looks up addresses with Apple's MapKit rather than Google's service.
What the app collects
- Your location. When you tap the button, the app asks for your location. It uses it to place you on the map, to work out the opposite point on the globe, and to look up an address for both points through the platform's geocoding service (Google on Android, Apple on iOS). The app never stores your location and never sends it to the developer. Versions up to 1.4 did send the coordinates and the time of each lookup to a Firebase Realtime Database run by the developer; version 1.5 removed that, and the stored records are being deleted.
- Crash reports and usage. Version 1.5 on Android includes Firebase Crashlytics and Firebase Analytics, which report crashes, the device model, operating system version, app version and basic events such as the app being opened. They never receive your location. Version 2.0, the shared Android and iOS version, removes them, so the app then reports nothing at all.
- Advertising. The result screen shows one banner ad from Google AdMob. Where the law requires it, the app asks for your consent before requesting any ad, and you can reopen those choices from the button on the first screen. Depending on your device's advertising settings and your consent, Google may use the advertising ID to show personalised or non-personalised ads, under Google's own policies.
Data the app handles on your device
Nothing is kept between sessions. The app stores no history, no settings and no copy of your location on the device. Closing the app forgets everything except what the third parties above have already received.
Third parties
The services below receive data as described above, each under its own privacy policy:
- Google Maps Platform draws the maps and turns coordinates into addresses on Android. On iOS that is Apple MapKit instead, under Apple's privacy policy.
- Google AdMob serves the banner ad and the consent form.
- Firebase (Google) handled crash reports and analytics up to version 1.5, and the coordinate log up to version 1.4.
The Google services are covered by the Google Privacy Policy. Nothing is sold, and the developer shares nothing with anyone else.
Deleting your data
Uninstalling the app removes it and everything it held on your device. The app keeps nothing between sessions, so there is nothing else to delete. For coordinates logged by version 1.4 or earlier, write to the address below with the approximate time and place of the lookup, since no identity is attached to the records and that is the only way to find them.
Children
The app is not designed for children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has used it and want that lookup removed, contact the address below.
Changes
If a future version ever changes any of the above, this page will be updated with a new effective date before that version ships, and the change will be noted in the app's release notes.
